The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is setting aside $466.5 million to boost global food security through the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program and the Food for Progress program. Both programs are international programs under the USDA.

Of the allocated funds, $24 million will be spent on U.S.-grown commodities. This amount is aligned with the requirements in the 2018 Farm Bill. The McGovern-Dole program will use purchased food in school feeding programs in nine countries. The Food for Progress program purchases food that can be sold locally by implementing programs. The money is then used to support local development, often in agriculture.

More than 1.2 million children and 200,000 farmers around the world are expected to benefit from this year’s U.S. commodities.
