The USDA announced plans to expand the testing of beef in slaughterhouses throughout the rest of the year. USDA Undersecretary for Food Safety Emilio Esteban said the focus will be on beef from dairy cows.

The USDA reports nearly 200 herds in 13 states have contracted bird flu since March. In May, the agency tested 103 beef samples from dairy cows sent to slaughter and found bird flu particles in one cow’s tissue.

FDA Chief Medical Officer for the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Steve Grube said the agency has reached out to states about possible nationwide raw mil testing. Colorado implemented mandatory weekly testing for dairy farmers on July 22. This resulted in 10 additional herds being detected in the state.
