While flooding continued along overflowing rivers, including the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, estimates for the potential crop damage are beginning to emerge. Parts of Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota continue to deal with the destruction left behind.

High waters and flooding continue to damage crops across productive growing areas. Crop consultant Michael Cordonnier told Pro Farmer there might be half to a million U.S. acres lost to the flooding. He estimated the harvested acres will be 90.3% to 90.7% of the plantings, down from an average of 91.3%.

The timing means that corn most likely will not be replanted and planting soybeans this late would be risky. In addition, the wet conditions could continue for the next few days according to USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey. There’s an abundant supply of moisture in the Gulf and local moisture in the area could continue to fuel additional rain.
