The United States and Europe are exploring options to acquire or manufacture H5N1 bird flu vaccines to protect poultry and dairy workers, veterinarians and lab technicians according to Reuter’s Julie Steenhuysen and Jennifer Rigby. Bulk vaccine from CSL Seqirus is being transformed into shots that could provide 4.8 million doses of the vaccine in the U.S.

These efforts are in response to a new form of bird flu that has spread through the wild bird and poultry populations and has now begun infecting mammal species. The announcement comes after a dairy worker in Michigan became the second human case confirmed in the U.S. The CDC emphasizes the threat to the general public remains low.

Steenhuysen and Jennifer Rigby reported that discussions about pre-pandemic vaccine use are happening at government levels and among scientists.
