The U.S. EPA finalized the cancellation of products containing the pesticide dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate (DCPA or Dacthal) due to its potential harm to unborn babies. Studies showed that DCPA exposure could lead to thyroid toxicity, low birth weight, impaired brain development, and decreased IQ.

DCPA was primarily used on crops like broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage and onions. In 2022 the EPA suspended DCPA registration. In May 2023, the EPA released a risk assessment confirming significant health concerns. Following an emergency suspension in 2024, AMVAC Chemical Corporation, the sole manufacturer of DCPA, announced its intent to cancel all DCPA registrations.

EPA’s final order prohibits the sale and use of DCPA, with AMVAC coordinating a return program for existing stocks. No person can continue using existing stocks of the product. The EPA will monitor the program and ensure proper disposal.
