In the second USDA Crop Progress Report of 2025, planting has kicked off in 11 of the top 18 corn-growing states. This is two fewer states than at the same time last year. As of April 13, 4% of the corn crop has been planted. That trails the five-year average of 5%.

This is where planting stood at the time of the report:

  • Colorado at 1%
  • Illinois at 1%
  • Iowa at 2%
  • Kansas at 11%
  • Kentucky at 3%
  • Minnesota at 1%
  • Missouri at 9%
  • Nebraska at 1%
  • North Carolina at 19%
  • Tennessee at 7%
  • Texas at 63%

The USDA reports that 2% of this year’s soybean crop has been seeded as of April 13. This is in line with the five-year year average.

The nine states that have begun planting soybeans include:

  • Arkansas at 14%
  • Illinois at 2%
  • Iowa at 1%
  • Kentucky at 2%
  • Louisiana at 22%
  • Mississippi at 5%
  • Missouri at 5%
  • North Carolina at 2%
  • Tennessee at 5%

The USDA said 7% of the spring wheat crop has been planted. This is on track with the five-year average. The nine top oat-growing states report 41% of the planting complete. That is 5% ahead of the five-year average. More than 25% of the oat crop across these states has emerged.
