The first seedless blackberry has been developed by Pairwise, a company that creates genetics-based solutions in food and agriculture. This marks the first time seedlessness has been achieved in a caneberry.

Company data indicates more than 30% of berry buyers do not like seeds. The seedless option can help grow the market with these additional consumers. Pairwise said the berry is sweet year-round and holds up well during shipment. The plant has been edited to be more compact and thornless for efficient harvesting and improved productivity.

Pairwise scientists used CRISPR tools and knowledge of plant genetics to create soft, small seeds similar to grapes and seedless watermelon. This technology could be used to remove pits and seeds from other fruits.
