According to recent research from Circana, organic produce sales in 2023 grew both in dollars spent and volume purchased. Compared to 2022, dollar sales increased 1.4% to $8.3 billion. The volume of produce sold increased 0.7% in the same timeframe, reaching 2.8 billion pounds. Organic berries were the most common purchase, representing $1.4 billion in sales.

Experts say the relatively small increase is a big deal — especially since inflation continues to influence consumer purchase decisions. Factors like changing consumer habits and more extensive selections of organic produce seem to be driving the change. A recent survey of more than 1,100 U.S. consumers also indicated shoppers choose organic produce for health and environmental reasons.

Even with the recent growth, demand for organic products only makes up 12% of dollar sales and 8% of volume sales.
