Milk bottling plantAs many as one-third of Americans have an anxiety disorder. The National Dairy Council’s team of researchers and health professionals are exploring opportunities for dairy to offer a science-based solution or other benefits to those struggling with anxiety. Checkoff-funded research has shown that consumers view food as a possible medium to help ease anxiety. Nutrition is one of many factors that impact a person’s mental health.

Observational research has indicated there could be an association between dairy foods and a neutral to beneficial impact on alleviating anxiety. Results from 132 studies of varying dietary patterns, including 19 specific to dairy food consumption, revealed a significantly lower risk of anxiety in seven cases and neutral associations in 12 cases. A consumer-facing campaign could be in the future as more research is conducted.
