Falling prices have led to the lowest net returns on record for organic farmers. Argus reports the 2023-24 average net return for organic corn, soybeans and wheat was just $42 per acre.

Organic feed-grade corn fell to $7.78 per bushel, while soybean prices dropped to $20.07 per bushel. Both reached multi-year lows. Wheat prices rose slightly but are also now declining.

Projections for 2024-25 show negative returns for corn, soybeans, and wheat. The total net return for all three crops is expected to be a loss of $213 per acre. Even though fertilizer prices are falling, rising production costs are eroding profits. This will create long-term financial difficulties for organic farmers.

The number of organic farmers is expected to decrease by 5% in 2024. Some may switch to conventional crops. Argus suggests the sustainability of organic farming is at risk as commodity prices continue to fluctuate.
