Closeup of United States Capital buildingCongress is racing the clock. A budget package needs to be passed by the end of the day on Friday, or there is a risk of a potential government shutdown. Part of this package includes a one-year extension of the farm bill. Financial aid to farmers had previously been a sticking point, but lawmakers may be close to an agreement.

Lawmakers told reporters on Capital Hill reporters that a tentative financial aid compromise and a one-year extension of the farm bill have been reached with Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee Glenn GT Thompson, ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee John Boozman, ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee David Scott and Chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee Debbie Stabenow. Negotiations continue on the potential $10 billion to $12 billion economic aid package for farmers.

Money for farmers was only one of the issues holding up the legislation. Democrats also requested funding to rebuild the bridge over Baltimore’s harbor, which was struck by a barge earlier this year. The negotiations may lead to the loss of approximately $14 billion in USDA conservation dollars passed in the Inflation Reduction Act.
