The U.S. EPA could see a notable shift in its regulatory approach and environmental policy as President-elect Trump has chosen former New York congressman Lee Zeldin to head the agency. Trump stated that Zeldin would ensure fair and swift deregulatory decisions and unleash the power of American businesses.

Zeldin is expected to focus on restoring U.S. energy dominance. He may also be tasked with rolling back several Biden administration environmental regulations. During a roundtable on agriculture roundtable this September in Pennsylvania, Zeldin highlighted Trump’s trade policies, which prioritized American farmers and strengthened the resiliency of the supply chain.

He previously expressed concerns about the proposed 2016 Renewable Volume Obligations (RVOs) under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program. There was concern that RVOs would require blending more ethanol than the E10 market could absorb. This could drive up the price of E10 for consumers. The EPA did finalize 2016 RVOs that were lower than those in the original proposal.

Environmental advocates criticize Zeldin’s nominations since his record includes opposing several climate-related bills and support for increased fossil fuel production.

The Senate must still confirm Zeldin.
