Select Iowans affected by recent flooding may soon be eligible for assistance from the USDA, according to a July 3 press release. The approval of the USDA’s Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) in disaster areas in Iowa will help supply up to one month of food supply benefits for those who qualify, with eligibility based on disaster income limits and have qualifying disaster-related expenses.

The state will provide more information in the coming days through local media, including application dates and food locations.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack commented, “It is USDA’s commitment to ensure that Iowans affected by the recent floods have access to the food they need during these difficult times. We recognize that the crisis does not end when the rain stops. For many families in these stricken areas, it is just the beginning.”

The USDA release notes, that although current SNAP households will be eligible for D-SNAP, a request may be placed for supplemental SNAP benefits to raise their allotment to the maximum amount for one month if they do not already receive that amount.
