While the CDC has maintained that the risk of bird flu virus to humans remains low, the agency encourages livestock workers to get vaccinated for seasonal influenza. The goal is to prevent a bird flu mutation that might spark a pandemic in people.

The CDC plans to set aside $5 million for the vaccinations. This should pay for an estimated 200,000 livestock worker vaccinations. It is relying on the states to implement the initiative. In addition, $5 million will be dedicated to educating and training farm workers to avoid infection.

There have been 14 known human infections of bird flu that resulted from contact with infected dairy cattle and poultry in the U.S. Those infected displayed minor symptoms of respiratory illness and possibly pinkeye. There have been no cases of transmission between people. The virus could gain that ability if it infects someone who also has a seasonal flu virus.
