Fueling equipmentThe California Air Resources Board is proposing to cap the amount of renewable diesel made from soybean or canola oil that qualifies for the state’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard. Companies would be eligible for no more than 20 percent of their biomass-based diesel made from soybean or canola oil. Proposed changes would also require feedstocks to be certified as meeting sustainable criteria.

Jet fuel would be exempted from the proposal’s requirements. This may help increase the use of sustainable aviation fuel.

During the first quarter of 2024, biofuel from soybean and canola oil accounted for about 30% of the renewable diesel qualified for LCFS credits. The American Soybean Association predicts the proposal would lead to higher fuel costs throughout California.
