A Santa Clara County, California, state laboratory detected bird flu virus in a container of raw milk purchased at a local Silicon Valley store. This was confirmed by a state laboratory, prompting a recall by the supplier, Raw Farm. The affected milk has lot code 20241109 and a best-by date of 11/27/2024. No illnesses were reported.

Separately, the CDC confirmed the first U.S. pediatric avian influenza case this year in Alameda County, California. The child is the only California case that did not involve a poultry or dairy worker with direct contact with infected animals. Nationwide, 59 human cases of bird flu have been reported in 2024. Of these, 29 were in California. The CDC emphasized there’s no evidence of person-to-person spread of the virus in the U.S.

California agricultural officials shared there were 402 California dairy herds with bird flu cases as of November 22. This is an increase of 66 herds in three days. State agriculture officials are closely monitoring affected herds, with some farms recovering and being placed under weekly surveillance.
