Biomass-based diesel (biodiesel) production is growing at rates faster than projected. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) volumes on a growth trajectory for biodiesel, sustainable aviation fuel and heating oil for 2023, 2024 and 20245. Yet biodiesel production in 2023 grew more aggressively than the assigned RFS rate.

The Clean Fuels Alliance America says biofuel production in total climbed to four billion gallons last year, compared to the one-billion-gallon growth in 2022. EPA finalized RFS volumes for 2023 – 2025 in June of last year, outlining a 60-million-gallon increase in biodiesel for 2023 and a 530-million-gallon increase for 2024 and 2025. The Clean Fuels Alliance says industry stakeholders including producers, processors, distributors and marketers, have continued to make significant investments to make clean fuels more available to consumers.
