The cheese heads of America continue to shine. USDA data shows 2022 was yet another record-breaking year in terms of per-capital cheese consumption. The agency’s Economic Research Service shows the average person in the U.S. ate 40.14 pounds of cheese last year, marking the first time the number has passed 40 pounds.

The record amount more than doubles the per-capita cheese consumption in 1982. Mozzarella remains the top cheese at 12.55 pounds per person, followed by Cheddar at 11.37 pounds. Italian-type cheese remain popular at just over 8 pounds per person.
