There’s no shortage of policy debates circling Capitol Hill. The National Agricultural Law Center says these three policy items are the most hot-button topics to watch for:

1. Corporate Transparency Act. This already went into effect at the beginning of the year and is designed to prevent fraud and money laundering. However, this also impacts private farm LLCs who are now on the hook to meet deadlines they might know nothing about.
2. Foreign Ownership. This became a big topic in 2021 but took a new direction last year when proposals began highlighting the amount of U.S. farmland being purchased by China, Russia, North Korea and Iran. More states are passing foreign ownership laws.
3. Solar Contracts. These lengthy contracts need to be accompanied by sound legal advice before any farmer signs one. Especially for solar projects, many upfront considerations need to be agreed upon before a contract commences.
