DTN Meteorologist John Baranick says the La Nina weather pattern is moving into North America. The cold side of the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) may cause colder conditions across the Northern Plains. The southern tier of the U.S. should remain warm.

Participation is likely across the Pacific Northwest and the Ohio Valley, while the southern tier is anticipated to be drier. Baranick said this is a transition week where we move from the old weather pattern into the new one. The latest storm track will be farther north from Colorado to Texas into the Great Lakes or Northeast. This could bring increased precipitation to the Midwest.

The Pacific Northwest should see increased precipitation, while the Southwestern U.S. should trend drier. The La Nina weather pattern is expected to persist through February and then weaken into the spring.
