The USDA reports U.S. farmers increased winter wheat planting. Total acreage increased 2% to 34.115 million acres.

Hard red winter wheat acreage grew 1% in the southern and central Plains to 24 million acres. Soft red winter wheat jumped 6% in the Midwest and Southeast to 6.44 million acres. White winter wheat increased 3% to 3.64 million acres, primarily in the western Plains.

The USDA reported mixed crop conditions, influenced by soil moisture levels. The U.S. produced 1.349 billion bushels of winter wheat in 2024.

States the increased production acres from 2024 included:

  • Illinois up 2% to 790,000 acres
  • Indiana up 6% to 330,000 acres
  • Michigan up 38% to 550,000 acres
  • Ohio up 27% to 660,000 acres
  • Wisconsin up 9% to 290,000 acres.
