After opposition from some Republican Representatives and President-elect Donald Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson pulled support for the Continuing Resolution that would have extended federal government funding through March 14. The measure would have also extended the farm bill and provided farmers almost $31 million in disaster assistance.

Objections to the legislation were raised due to billions of dollars in spending that had been added. As of Thursday afternoon, lawmakers are now facing a Friday deadline to approve funding for the government with no clear path forward. The Office of Management and Budget instructed federal agencies to start communicating shutdown procedures to employees.

House Speaker Johnson has the option of submitting a clean resolution to Congress that excludes additional provisions in the 1,500-page spending package that was previously negotiated. Agri-Pulse’s Philip Brasher reported that President-elect Trump has left the door open to including farm aid and disaster assistance in a new bill, but the clock is ticking.
