Minnesota Representative Angie Craig has been elected to lead Democrats on the House Agriculture Committee. She beat out David Scott, the current ranking Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee and California Representative Jim Costa. Scott faced health concerns over the last several years.

Craig will become the first woman ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee. Craig said she plans to focus squarely on issues affecting working class Americans. This includes lowering food and energy costs and strengthening the farm safety net.

The GOP will add six members to the Agriculture Committee to fill departures on the GOP side. Washington Representative Dan Newhouse, a member of the Appropriations Committee, joins five first-term representatives. They include Tony Wied of Wisconsin, Rob Bresnahan of Pennsylvania, Mark Harris of North Carolina, Mark Messmer of Indiana and David Taylor of Ohio.
