Texas Federal Judge Amos L. Mazzant issued a nationwide injunction against the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) on December 4. The CTA was supposed to help law enforcement track and combat activities such as money laundering, organized crime, and terrorism. However, the rule would have required more than 230,000 farmers to file with the Treasury Department by year-end.

The rule initially required more than 32 million corporate entities to disclose their “beneficial owners” to the Treasury by January 1. Federal Judge Amos L. Mazzant said the rule requiring state-registered companies to report to the federal government was a departure from history and fell outside of Congress’s authority to regulate interstate and international commerce.

The judge’s ruling prevents the act from going into effect on January 1. The case is still working its way through the courts. Since other judges could rule differently as the case progresses, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association is continuing to work with Congress to find a permanent fix.
