The USDA is investing $15 million to expand sales of organic dairy products to schools and youth programs as part of the Organic Dairy Product Promotion program. Agriculture Undersecretary Jenny Moffitt explained that expanded access to organic dairy products in schools would promote healthy consumption habits.

The USDA reports that certified organic milk sales more than doubled to reach 6.6% of U.S. milk sales in 2022. This was produced by roughly 2,500 organic dairy farms with an average of 142 cows. In 2009, organic milk represented 2.9% of U.S. milk sales.

High feed prices and tight supplies have made it challenging for producers to feed organic dairy herds.
