The USDA awarded $5 million to the International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA) and Clemson University to establish a Sustainable Packaging Innovation Lab. The lab will focus on creating new packaging solutions to address global regulations and reduce single-use plastics in the specialty crop industry.

This funding is part of a larger $25 million USDA initiative to support U.S. exports of fruits, vegetables, and nuts by ensuring they meet international packaging and labeling standards. Collaborating with the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research and the University of Florida, the project will accelerate the development of sustainable packaging. This is crucial for maintaining food quality and minimizing environmental impact.

The initiative also builds on IFPA’s Fresh Field Catalyst Accelerator program, which has promoted innovation in the produce industry over the past three years. With packaging regulations tightening in key markets like the EU, Canada, and Australia, this lab will help U.S. produce exports remain competitive while advancing sustainability efforts.
