Industry consultant Judy Gaines predicts more than three million boxes of oranges may have been lost due to Hurricane Milton. Fruit was knocked from branches and many citrus trees were left lying on the ground. This means the Flordia harvest will likely be the worst since the 1920s.

This news comes on top of already elevated orange juice prices that touched a record high last month because of tight global supplies. A drought slashed production in Brazil, the world’s top exporter.

Florida grows most of the country’s oranges for juice production. It ranks behind California as the largest orange-producing state. Before Hurricane Milton, the USDA estimated Florida’s orange production at 15 million boxes. That would have been the worst crop since 1933.

This comes as Florida orange producers were recovering from Hurricane Ian two years ago and a battle with citrus green disease that damaged groves.
