The current agreement between the International Longshoremen’s Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance is set to expire on Sept. 30. If a new agreement is not reached before the deadline, the Longshoremen’s union says workers will strike — bringing ports from Maine to Texas to a halt. That includes New York, Savannah, Houston, Miami, and New Orleans.

While the potential strike is not expected to impact bulk grain exports for soybeans or corn significantly, it will likely impact containerized ag products. This could include a small portion of soybeans but will likely hit livestock products the hardest. Shippers will have to find safe storage for those commodities or reroute to the West Coast — both costly options.

As of Sept. 25, formal conversations around a new contract had not yet begun.
