A listeria outbreak that led to 57 hospitalizations and nine deaths in 18 states so far has been attributed to Boar’s Head deli meat produced in the Jarratt, Virginia plant. Reports of illness are expected to rise since the incubation period for listeria may last more than two months.

The CDC’s investigation unveiled that meats sliced at deli counters were contaminated with listeria. The recall includes every product made at the Jarratt, Virginia facility. The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service reported insects, mold and mildew at the plant in the 12 months before it was voluntarily shut down. Overall, 69 reports of non-compliance were filed by the Food Safety and Inspection Service over the last year.

On July 26, Boar’s Head recalled more than 200,000 pounds of liverwurst. On July 29, the voluntary recall was expanded to all products made at the plant.
