Pigs in a hoop barnWhile training is essential, animal caretakers need more than information to enforce biosecurity measures consistently. A new study funded by the Swine Health Information Center found positive reinforcement for consistent, accurate biosecurity practices could help. This could include rewards for desired behavior.

Biosecurity practices, like isolating sick animals and regularly disinfecting equipment, help protect animal populations from spreading disease. This study used online surveys to gauge the opinions and behaviors of 139 caretakers at five swine production facilities. The results indicated positive reinforcement and support from supervisors could help promote better adherence to biosecurity practices.
