The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the United States could increase by 1,400% in 2024 if all capacity additions come online. Investments in SAF have increased due to the EPA’s Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), federal tax credits and tax credits incentivizing the fuel. The White House established a goal to meet 100% U.S. aviation fuel demand with SAF by 2050. This would require more than 2.0 million b/d of SAF to meet the projected demand.

Global demand for SAF also continues to grow. The International Air Transport Association projects a tripling of SAF in 2024 to 1.9 billion liters (1.5 million tonnes). The agency reports that 140 renewable fuel projects that produce SAF have been announced to be in production by 2030, which could result in a production capacity of 51 million tonnes.

All biofuels in the U.S., including SAF, renewable heating oil, renewable naphtha, renewable propane and renewable gasoline are expected to increase by 50%, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
