Dry corn field with cracked dirtA worsening drought in North Carolina is taking its toll on the state’s crops. The drought has intensified over the last three months with 100% of the state suffering from moisture stress. More than 19% of the state is in D2 severe drought with 68% in D1 moderate drought. The other 12% of the state is abnormally dry.

More than 90% of North Carolina’s corn crop is in fair condition or worse. As of the most recent Crop Progress report, 44% is in poor condition and 29% is in very poor condition. Some farmers have attempting to salvage the corn crop by chopping it for silage.

The drought is also taking a toll on the soybean and cotton crops. The USDA rated 26% of the state’s soybean crop as good, 43% as fair, 24% as poor and 7% as very poor. Cotton is faring slightly better with 5% excellent, 44% good, 39% fair, 14% poor and 7% very poor.
