Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Texas, damaging agriculture infrastructure. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service agents are just beginning to assess damages. Some grain infrastructure was damaged by winds that reached up to 95 mph.

In Wharton County, south of Houston, Hurricane Beryl damaged crops as producers prepared to harvest. In Hillje, three United Agricultural Cooperative grain bins with a capacity of 1.1 million bushels were destroyed. While the bins were primarily empty in preparation for harvest, that impacts about a third of the facility’s storage.

Acres of corn and sorghum were leaning or flattened. Most of the corn in the areas was reportedly ready to combine. Rice that was in the process of being dried was hit with 3 to 8 inches of rain, which fell across Wharton and Matagorda counties. Muddy conditions will hamper the first cut of rice.
