The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service shared that the U.S. is on track to produce 222,000,000 pounds of cherries this year. Michigan is expected to account for 182,000,000 pounds of this total. It will be the state’s largest crop since 2018, a 37.7% increase from last year’s crop.

Michigan grows approximately 75% of the tart cherries. The state is also helping to boost the sweet cherry numbers. Nationwide, sweet cherries are estimated at 355,000 tons, a mere .3% increase from last year. With California and Washington experiencing decreased production, Michigan boosted production. If the state didn’t produce cherries, there would have been a 5.9% decrease in sweet cherry production.
