Field of hemp. Industrial kind of this plant is not a drug but a resource. It contains hardly any THC

South Dakota was a latecomer to the hemp fiber market, making it legal three years ago. South Dakota Industrial Hemp Association board member shares that the state is now the number one producer of hemp fibers and boasts the highest yield per acre.

Farmers grow three different varieties of hemp in South Dakota: CBD, fibers, and grain and seed. South Dakota achieved the number one spot for grain and seeds in 2022. Farmers in the state have discovered hemp prefers the soil and weather better than neighboring states. The photosensitive plant thrives with long daylight hours and lower summer temperatures.

Hemp also has a positive impact on the soil that helps other crops in the rotation. The state has over 3,000 acres of hemp production spread across 40 farms. Continued growth in acreage is expected.

Hemp grown in South Dakota is mainly used for animal bedding and building materials like hempcrete.
