The cards for the farm bill are now on the table and it is time for negotiations to begin. Ranking Republican Senate Ag Committee member John Boozman explained that it was time to hammer out a farm bill with Democrats or just agree to disagree. In the latter case, Senators would need to start working on an extension of the current farm bill, which expires at the end of September.

The current text in the House bill and GOP Senate framework have provisions opposed by many on the Democratic side of the aisle. Senate Ag Chair Debbie Stabenow has indicated she will not move forward with a farm bill containing the nutrition and climate policies included in the House committee’s bill or the Senate Ag Republican’s framework. Stabenow plans to sit down with Boozman to find common ground as the deadline approaches.
