As discussions surrounding gene-edited meat have escalated, a longstanding debate about regulatory oversight is finally being resolved. The FDA has released guidance declaring it will lead the charge and consult with the USDA.

A recent memorandum of understanding (MOU) spelled out specific responsibilities. The FDA regulates intentional genomic alterations in animals to ensure they are safe for the animal and safe for anyone who eats food derived from the animal. The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service enforces the Federal Meat Inspection Act, Poultry Products Inspection Act and Egg Products Inspection Act.

The MOU stated that records related to pending submissions of gene-edited products will be shared with the USDA so they can evaluate certain scenarios for risks to disease transmission of animal health.
