Efficient feeding programs are a must for any livestock operation. Since this input usually accounts for at least half of a farm’s expenses, making quality feed go further can reduce costs while improving herd health. A vital component of this equation is ensuring all feed is properly mixed.

But mixing feed thoroughly can prove challenging. Barry Bradford, animal science professor at Michigan State University, says average feed management is “quite good” compared to 20 years ago. However, taking care to avoid waste and trying not to leave excess feed exposed to the elements can help reduce current exorbitant feed costs. Bradford encourages producers to look inside their mixers and clean the knives consistently while eyeing parts that should receive maintenance or be replaced.
