A bipartisan bill was introduced this week that aims to strengthen cybersecurity for the food and agriculture industry. The Farm and Food Cybersecurity Act would require the agriculture secretary to work closely with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to conduct a biannual study of threats and vulnerabilities within the agriculture industry.

Crisis simulation exercises would also be required on an annual basis with the Homeland Security Department, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Director of National Intelligence. The representatives stated that protecting the nation’s farms and food security against cyberattacks is critical to overall national security. The legislation has been endorsed by major farm groups.
