Following an impressive, long-running trend in the dairy industry, milk production continues to climb despite fewer cows. USDA estimated 2023 milk production to be 226.6 billion pounds compared to 2022’s 226.5 billion pounds. Milk output for 2024 is projected to be 228.3 billion pounds, a record amount.

But how does milk production remain high as more and more dairy farms either liquidate herd sizes or close altogether? Milk production per cow remains high, with 2023 boasting the highest production-per-cow estimate yet. The numbers are keeping milk prices low. Consumer demand needs to climb before too much difference is seen in prices.
