The U.S. Department of Commerce reported a year-over-year inflation increase for December 2023. The all-items December inflation rate of 3.4% was also up 0.3% over November 2023. Looking specifically at the food index, there was an overall .2% increase for the month. Food in restaurants increased (.3%) more than in grocery stores (.1%).

Within the grocery category, meats, poultry, fish and eggs all saw an increase. The Department of Commerce reported that eggs saw the highest percentage increase (8.9%). Dairy products also saw a small bump (.3%), while fresh and processed produce, breakfast cereals and bakery items all saw slight decreases (.1%, 2.4% and .3%, respectively).
