Apple inventories were 33% higher in December compared to the same time in 2022, according to the U.S. Apple Association. A whopper of a crop in 2023 provides retailers the chance to bolster apple marketing efforts. In Michigan, a key apple-producing state, localized frost damage impacted some areas, but apple producers have otherwise enjoyed a great growing season.

USDA estimates 32 million bushels for 2023. Michigan produced 32,380,952 bushels in 2022, with the Gala variety taking the top spot, followed by Honeycrisp, fuji and Cripps pink varieties. EverCrisp and Ambrosia varieties are expected to gain attention in 2024. Food retailers should consider devoting space to apples, specifically, newer varieties consumers may not be familiar with yet.
