A new tomato option will be available to consumers in 2024. A first-of-its-kind purple tomato with high antioxidants has been approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Sales of the tomato have already begun in restaurants and several farmers’ markets even as its commercial name remains undecided.

FDA’s decision supports USDA’s positive decision in September of last year for Norfolk Healthy Produce, the company spearheading the purple-tomato path. The company says the purple color comes from two genes sourced from the snapdragon flower, boasting exceptional antioxidant properties. Other nutrition data remains similar to its red-skinned counterparts.
