Senators John Hoeven (R-ND) and Jon Tester (D-MT) introduced legislation last week that would incorporate the Livestock Disaster Relief Act in the 2023 Farm Bill. The senators contend incorporation into the farm bill would improve the current system.

Under the legislation, the coverage between Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP) and Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees and Farm-raised Fish Program (ELAP) would be better aligned, according to the senators. The bill also seeks to expand ELAP coverage to reimburse farmers and ranchers impacted by ongoing drought conditions.

Tester, a third-generation farmer, says he knows how challenging it can be when disasters like drought or a winter storm descend on an operation. He says, “That’s why I’m proud to team up with Senator Hoeven on this bipartisan bill to ensure Montana ranchers receive the relief they need…so they can continue to raise the best cattle in the world.”
