The cattle market took quite the climb after Memorial Day weekend. Cattle in the north traded at $185 to $188 per cwt. live, $3 to $5 higher. Dressed traded $5 to $6 higher at $290 to $292, and cattle in the south were $4 to $9 higher at $175 to $180. Week to week, the last week of May will mark the third highest on record.

Analysts expect cash markets to remain strong in the remaining first week of June, but between active trading over the last two weeks and packer access to June-contracted cattle, the upside potential is limited. However, sustained beef gains could spur strength in the futures markets as summer-fall contracts remain below cash values.
